Disc Golf Taking Shape, Grant Gives Boost

As volunteers worked hard clearing the paths at Lake Michigan Camp & Retreat for a new disc golf course, the project got a big boost of funding thanks to a $27,000 grant from the United Methodist Camp & Retreat Ministries Association (UMCRM).

“We’re pretty excited about the progress made on the course this spring, and the support of our first-round sponsors has put us just $9,000 short of fully funding the project,” said Site Director Erik Bengston. “We still have hole sponsorship opportunities for groups, businesses and individuals. That will help us complete not just a nine-hole family course, but a full 18.”

The first phase of the project is on target to be completed by July 2023 includes a nine-hole Family/Ace course and an 18- hole Professional/Amateur course. Erik estimates the second nine-holes on the Family course along with the finishes touches on both courses (like benches and signage) to be ready in spring 2024 once all sponsorships are finalized.

$1.7 million in Ministry Impact Grants were awarded to 68 projects by the UMCRM Association. The program was funded by an anonymous family foundation. Michigan Area United Methodist Camping also received a grant. See story.
